Students from the Pātangatanga hub visited me in the art room today for their very first lesson of the year. The Pātangatanga students are the newest in the school, some of them have only been at school for a few weeks. We split the students into two groups today. Each group spent half of the day with me in the art room and then the other half with Dianne doing Sustainability activities.

This lesson followed on from the last lesson Pātangatanga had in the art room where they learned about the different types of line. The aim for today was to create a 3D turtle in clay and decorate it with lines and patterns.

For many of the students this was their first time using clay. They did an amazing job of learning how to use new tools and techniques today. They learnt how to join clay pieces by applying the slip and score technique. I showed the students how to make a range of different marks using the purpose built clay tools and as well as make-shift tools such as toothbrushes, shells, forks and skewers.

These cute little turtles are due to go in the kiln soon. I hope to give the students an opportunity to glaze their turtles next time that they come to visit the art room. I will be sure to post their final pieces.
