Picture Book Covers

Caitlin’s class have been working on picture books this term as part of an independent study. They created characters and drew images to illustrate their books. Caitlin asked me to spend today helping the students get started on the covers for their books.

We spent time looking at examples of picture book covers and then identified what we thought was effective about each cover. Based on what they studied, the students decided that their own picture book covers needed to be simple and bold, use colour for impact, reflect the plot of their story but not necessarily in an obvious way and also show some creativity.

The students planned their works in pencil, outlined in black pen and then painted using the watercolour paints. Below are some of the book covers that have been finished. They look very professional! I’m really looking forward to seeing the rest of the book covers when they are finished.
