Space Rocket Prints

Deanne’s class having been studying the solar system this term. Studying space is always fascinating for little learners so creating art based on this topic was a great way for them to show their learning. I was very impressed with their knowledge of the planets and the solar system and it was charming to hear their scientific discussions throughout the day as they created their artworks.

The students followed a similar process to the lesson I did with Rachel’s class earlier in the term. They studied images of space rockets, drew sketches and transferred their images into a polystyrene printing block. The students made prints by rolling their brayers in the inking well and loading up their printing blocks with an even amount of ink. They placed a blank piece of paper on top and rolled a clean brayer over the paper to transfer their image from the printing plate.

While the prints were drying the students created a galaxy background using white crayon, violet dye and ultramarine dye. This activity was a chance for them to show the learning that they had been doing in class. They drew stars, distant planets, space stations, the milky way, black holes and supernovas! Next they created planets by blending pastels on a circle of paper that they made with the giant hole punch. Once again they were able to show off the learning they had been doing this term by naming the planets, colouring them appropriately and discussing facts they knew about the planet.

The students gathered all of their pieces of art together to create their final composition. We talked about different ways to put the pieces together to create balance and movement within the artwork. I had a wonderful time with Deanne’s class today. I am super impressed with their creativity, inquisitiveness and scientific understanding. It’s no wonder their artworks have turned out to be so delightful!
